After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.
Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.
Nice morning in the roaster yesterday, got through all the Christmas coffee already -"build it and they will come" 3 roasts 2kg Rwanda Inzovu 1kg Yirgicheffe Konga 2kg Yemen Bami
Just opened a 2yr old vac packed brick of Daterra Yellow Bourbon, and it still smells like fresh crop. Spent the evening last night doing 1/2 dozen 100gm roasts trying to tame the sample roaster... This thing has so much heating energy compared to a normal roaster - it's a real struggle just trying to get a roast longer than six minutes! More cupping fun today.
Feel your pain borat123 the sample roaster never translates a profile to the big roaster. Is it halogen or gas? Was the vac packed coffee fridged as well or just dark and dry spot? Chester
Just kept in a cupboard. IMO the vac packed bricks do a great job of suspending the coffee pretty much as it was the day it was packed. The roaster is a two barrel gas - not for profiling, but just testing samples. It has digital temp setting and burner control, but since the probe is measuring env temp it probably would have been better with a gas flow gauge and a bean temp probe... Early days yet but definitely a learning curve as none of the 'normal' numbers I'm used to make any sense on this one..
So you only need to slow it a little bit, what are you aiming for yellowing at 3-4mins, FC around 7 and finishing at 9-10. Sure it won't take you long to be all over it. Gas gauge would be good so can you retrofit one? Chester
Yep, FC @ 7, then dump at 9-10, agtron 58, is pretty much SCAA standard for a sample roast. What I'm finding is unusually low drop temps, high airflow and low gas settings are needed to achieve the 'standard'. Definetly want a gas flow gauge as the flow knobs are very imprecise and the same position on both barrels can result in large differences in heat. I need to do some more playing and cupping before deciding if any other mods would be worthwhile.
Don't think that approach is anything unusual really borat123 with such small batch sizes, I would see it as the norm from my own experiences, even translates that way when I do small batch on the SilverStreak. Keep us posted on your results and photos of upgrades. Chester
After blind cupping all six samples, it turns out the one that cupped the best was the one nearest to the 'standard' - which is not quite what I was expecting... More wooden boxes arriving soon..
So that was 2kg of Nicaragua Lupululo light/medium roast. 2kg Kenya Wakulima medium/dark roast 1kg Ninety+ Hachira2 medium roast Planned them with the roast designer V2 (check the calculating DTR thread) then roasted them using the coffee sweet software on the SilverStreak and the numbers really stacked up (will do some more testing but impressed thus far) Chester
I did a 500gvroas in the KKTO yesterday of: 180 Yirgacheffe Gr2 180 Sumatran Toraja 140 Columbian Huila Looking forward to this... I loved the mocha Kenyan blends I'd did prior to Christmas but I'm all out of Yemen.
Had the final roast on the old TO on Monday. Roasted it a bit lighter based on what I picked up from Cosmic_couple with his hipster roasts for a change to my usual 2C roasts. This was a 4 bean blend (Attempting to use up my leftovers) 30% Brazil Daterra Estate Opu 2 Exotic 30% PNG Wahgi AA 20% Tiger 20% Indo Sumatran Mandheling Kuda Mas
Roasted 750 grams of Uganda Kisoro in the Coretto yesterday, stopped the roast @ the first snaps of second crack, nice even roast, approx level 9. "Uganda Kisoro AA. This high grown Ugandan Arabica is washed but not polished and then screened to a large AA size. In the roaster this is easy to roast but expect plenty of chaff. In the cup it has a subtle acidity and heavy body that made a great double espresso and a syrupy ristretto. This worked best for me roasted to a CS10 depth where the cocoa range of flavours dominate."
