Anyone know how to dismantle a Krups XP7240?

edited October 2008 in Espresso Machines
Hi there,

After a lot of experimentation and adapting to this machine's rather weird way of working, I can now make quite good coffee with it. But I'm sure that even the finest grind setting is way too course for proper espresso. I'm a handy guy and I'm confident I could make it grind finer if I could just get to the innards.

So the question is, how do I open the thing up? I've got my Torx 15 screwdriver and I've got all the obvious fasteners out - but the top is still caught on something. Does any one know the trick? I think it has something to do with a rectangular opening I can see with a metal tab of some sort in it.

Can anyone help? A repair guide would be ideal.

  • There is a free pdf file here but you need to join to download Hope that helps
  • Thanks for the reply but that pdf is just an electronic version of the User Guide that comes with the machine. It doesn't tell you how to open it up.  :'(  What I need is something like a workshop manual. But I'd settle for just some advice from someone who's already opened one before. :D
  • G'day David, would you able to post a couple of pictures of the machine, it may help with some suggestions. Steve.
  • I opened up a eurolab coffee machine recently to cannibalise some parts only to find that it was fastened from the inside in such a way that the only way to get the top off was to snap a few joins (obviously the machine is not intended to be repaired or modified!) - hope this is not the case with the krups!

I'll do anything to help. If you just need to know what the model looks like, here's a picture of it at Krups http://www.krups.com/NR/rdonlyres/20576751-B479-4007-88A7-2C6191883D56/0/XP7240_middle.jpg. But I can also take a photo of the rectangular hole I'm talking about tomorrow after work. Thanks for your interest in my dilemma! ;)
  • To be honest, if it's a Krups the best way to dismantle it is probably with an ax! -dR  8-)
  • I know this may be a bit late but Are you using fresh coffee beans? Are the beans light roast (not oily) Are you sure the krups has a burr grinder not a spinning blade? Remember the 3-3-3 rule 3 years for green beans, 3 weeks for roasted beans, 3 min for ground beans KK
  • OK. Here's a pic for Lovey. This is looking down under the warming tray with the plastic guard that's usually there removed: Image250_small.jpg Notice the fairly square hole towards the bottom-right of the panel? I suspect the metal tab inside there is some sort of catch that releases the whole top shell of the case ... if only I knew how! For Koffee Kosmo: Yes, they're fresh. No, they're dark (I like STRONG coffee!) - but not oily. And, sure, it's a burr grinder. Does any superauto have spinning blades??? Who would buy such a thing? It's actually a pretty clever mechanism with a vertical drop from the grinder into the brew cylinder so there are no stale grounds. But it just isn't fine enough. The finest setting is about the same fineness as is right for a drip-filter and that's way too course for espresso. Back to the panel. :)
  • David I say anything that goes together also comes apart I have noticed with plastic casings you need to pry the outer casing out to release the locking tab If you were in Brisbane I would help you do it KK
  • sorry, still say use the axe ;)
  • Update: For anyone else that has an XP7240, the top comes off by gently levering up from the back edge (after you've removed all 5 retaining screws, of course). After that, it was relatively easy to increase the fineness of the grind and it has improved the coffee 100%. Krups are doing themselves a great disservice by delivering a machine with incorrect grind setting and compounding that by making it so hard to fix the error.
  • So back to drinking and enjoying coffee again David If you are happy then I am happy  :D KK
  • thanks for posting your discussion on this, Dave. I am now in the same quandry owing to wanting to clean innards of the damn thing. Is the clear plastic bean container on top removeable without first removing the entire top casing? I see what looks to be screwhole under the back edge of the container, but the container appears to be kept in place by the plastic shroud surrounding the grind selector. Any help would be appreciated !
  • Okay I will detail the separation of my XP7240 Krups machine Remove Water Unit/Service Card/Waste Tray/Spent Coffee etc (items that normally can come off) Now Firstly remove the front screws under the warming tray There are 3 torx screws (1 holding the cleaning tablet tray and 2 others) Next remove the 4th screw located in the Bean Hopper (Don't loose it down the grinder) Using a sharp blade pop the disc out of the grind selection nob (the bit with symbols on it) Now rotate the button and you will noticed there is a clear plastic tab and black plastic tab inside the grind selector (This will be opposite side of the grinder hole) Now a slightly tricky bit Using a sharp blade or fine screw driver try to put the black tab away from the clear plastic tab. It may help to do this while slightly lifting the hopper from the grinder edge, This will provide a little leverage. You should then see it separate and the hopper is free. Remove the 5th screw located in the hole under the hopper. Now to remove the top section to expose the inside do the following With a flat blade screw drive find the three gaps located behind the front control panel on the top unit. Pop the plastic away from the front cover to loosen. (3 clip tabs) Located at the rear of the unit under the front lid are two more clips. Place a flat bladed screw driver and lift the tabs away from the machine to unclip the lid. (2 Clip tabs) This will allow the top of the unit to be removed. Thats where I am upto now.
  • Next stage is to remove the rear cover To do this the front facia (Stainless fake look) needs to be removed grab the top of the Frame and pull upwards and the complete facia will pop off. This will reveal 4 more screws in the front of the unit Remove the bottom 2 screws. Remove the 2 other screws located under the water container. These are deep in the holes. Slowly pull the complete outer casing assisting with a flat bladed screw driver the movement. This has now exposed the complete workings of the unit for further disassembly.
  • hows it going, im new to this forum, I have just gotten on of these machines, really cheap (know i know why :)) how did you go about making the grind finer? i managed to get to top off now but apart from cleaning up all the escaped coffee i don't know how to do much else.
  • Hi Smartweisweb - welcome to the forum - I don't know this particular machine, but most of them simply have a rotating dial that you turn - you could try to pm Peter to get more info. A
  • Hello from Greece. I have remove the top cover for the 3rd time but as i see the machine has coffee stucked everywhere. Does anyone had this problem?? I ve send it before 5 months to krups
  • Well I am confused, I have an xp7240...am trying to replace the steam nozzle assemble (the new one I have received just looks like it will just clip in place once I can get to the one in the machine.) I assumed it would just be a case of taking the front off the machine but cannot work out how to do this without having to dismantle the whole machine !!!!! But although I am following the instructions posted I can find the two torx screws under the warming tray.... and two at the rear bottom of the maching which lie under the water tank (removed) but cannot even see which is the cleaning tablet tray one mentioned by Peter?   anyone help...please
  • Ok  well have now identified the third torx screw mentioned by Peter; but before I go any further do I need to dismantle the machine just replace the steam nozzle assembly?   help...anyone
  • Hi Kingsmead - welcome to the forum, but I have to advise you that very few people on the forum here know much about the Krups machines. You will find that most members use E61 group head-type manual machines [whether for home or for work], so you may not find a specialised answer to your question here - it may be better to check with an authorised Krups dealer. best A

Hi Peter I came across this thread, and your post, after doing a Google of how to dismantle my machine. Thanks for the great instructions as it confirmed my thoughts that the key to getting in was removing the bean grinding coarseness selector but I just wasn't sure how you do it, so thanks for that. I'm currently stuck a little bit at the stage that I quoted above. Could you possibly elaborate a bit more specifically as to exactly how you release those two clips at the back please.
  • Does he mean slide the flat blade screwdriver under the cover and twist gently to release the small plastic tabs allowing the cover to lift? Hi LF and welcome!  I'm afraid I haven't seen Peter around recently and don't believe he has posted for a while.  Hopefully someone with a similar machine or technical experience can help.  In the mean time Welcome to the forum and Peter, we'd love to hear from you.  Your help the first time was invaluable!
  • Hi Brett Thanks for the reply and welcome. I sorted my issue. I'd forgotten to remove the fifth screw as documented in Peter's post,  so once I actually did that the clips released with no problem and I now have all the casing removed.  :thumb:
  • Fabulous... But remember to go softly where water and electricity co-habit.  The cemetery is full of DIY sparkies!
