After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.
Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.
G'Day Borat, long time no see. Interesting photo's, I was under the impression word coffee prices were at record highs at the moment, obviously misinformed.
Interesting stuff Borat, Aussie coffee retailers would have us believe coffee prices are at an all time high. Guess the low Aust dollar has a significant affect, obviously not world coffee prices.
I found myself on a short trip to Nairobi, and played coffee tourist for a day or two. Managed to visit a small plantation & also the coffee exchange. Here's a few Iphone pics from my travels. Tough times for the farmers with prices so low...
hi mate, good to hear from you; always great to get pics from origin! A
Try and purchase quality lots from an Australian broker in many origins at the moment and you are paying up to 40% more than 18 months ago. Ethiopia, India, Costa Rica, most Africans, PNG and Sumatrans are all big bucks relatively speaking. Why, because there are chronic ans systematic shortages. Global C-Index is but one of many starting points but it actually has only minimal impact on the local price due to the significant gap in time between when a coffee was negotiated and how the demand side of the market works when its finally available in a local domestic store. The index is misleading and does not adequately address the specialty market because differentials are often not transparently visible. I know one thing that's certain. The growth in costs associated with producing a quality roasted product have increased at 3x the rate of retail price growth over the last 8 years.

Amen to that, and also note real wholesale sale prices (roasted coffee to the cafe trade) have actually gone backwards. Note also, that the largest volume of roasted coffee sold is FAQ grade in commercial blends to the trade, rather than (small lot) specialty grade to the public. Owing to the (lets not get into this here/now) large amount of downward pressure created by increased aggressive competition in the trade through an ever growing number of new roasteries fragmenting the market, roasters are ever looking for product at better prices. It is therefore very interesting that it could be said that the ever proliferating number of new roasteries and coffee industry experts, is atleast one of the reasons why there is downward pressure on pricing through the broad spectrum of the coffee market, which could carry right down to grower level......!
Welcome back Borat! Great pictures, more so that they've elicited fascinating discussion pertaining to industry issues to which we are so rarely availed. Most sobering gents!
Thanks guys we love it. The chickens, ducks & fowl are for both eggs and meat. The guinea fowl also for tiger snake repelling, and I love their call. Full of character.
Great strong chook house FC.[emoji106] Envious lifestyle there. Country living with chooks, and working life as a award winning coffee roaster. Now to work on my Golden Bean home roasting entry.... All the best for this year if you,re competing. [emoji106]

Ouch - sounds like pain from one end of the value chain to the other... It seems like lots of importers and ease of supply has lowered some of the barriers to entry. More roasters then set up shop, undercut prices in an effort to compete, which keeps downward pressure on retail prices. So who's getting the biggest chunk of the pie? Maybe Samuel Brannan the 1800's San Francisco gold rush millionaire had the right idea - he realised there was more money to be made selling picks & shovels to the miners than actually mining for gold...
Hey Fresh Coffee How do the fowls go at chasing off snakes? We have just moved onto 35 acres near Ballarat and I'm deathly afraid of snakes!! I'm not afraid of .410 shotguns tho We have 6 chooks at present (had 7 until a small fox raid last week) and a few miniature horses plus a miniature Australian bulldog (10 Angus steer to come) that has no idea what a snake is!! If the fowls are a good deterrent we may have to look into them.

Congrats on choosing a great lifestyle. Cant yet say how the fowl go with the snakes, because we only started with them at Christmas and they were only babies/chicks through the last season. They are now mature so we will see this season. Mind you we have a variety of anti snake "plans" happening at any one time, and some seasons are worse than others (for snakes), and you can never tell if anything actually worked or not just because you may not have seen too many snakes. Last season in our locality saw more snakes than we have seen for some years and this is probably due to the good season. I believe this year will be much worse because they will be very well bred up in greater numbers! But only time will tell. We lost several animals last year due to snake bite. Guinea fowl are said to gang up in numbers, on snakes, and kind of round them up and go them. The reality....? Regardless, they are real characters.
Little Joe choc lab born today; a winged visitor to our front garden (geez that was a hard one to nail...had to stalk him for quite a while, and he flew away and came back several times...must like that bush area). FWIW, two different cameras/lenses combos
Thanks. I didnt even notice the detail in the photo until afterwards when cropping and taking a much closer look...such as the two little claws hanging on to the plant in a sideways manner. The bird was quite small (roughly 100mm long), kept moving and wouldnt allow the fotografeur to get too close. Photo taken at 105 mm focal length with the 24 to 105mm lens, on 5d Mk2. ISO 400, F4, 1/500th sec. Puppy photo taken at night with 1100D, 24 to 70mm lens on an "indicated" 43 mm focal length, ISO 400, F2.8, 1/60th sec and flash with no exposure bias.
Thanks, and he is a tough little critter! 1100D, 24 to 70mm lens on an "indicated" 66 mm focal length, ISO 400, F2.8, 1/60th sec and flash with no exposure bias. Taken at night.
very good FC. I remember when my boy was born. He was tiny. Now it's time to breed him. He's a champion blood line pedigree blue English staff and is very toned and quite a looker.
Melbourne today. Well the last 4 days. This is SPRING. The cool change finally came not long ago. I couldn't not get a decent coffee at home the last couple days. I was continuously chasing the grind.
Well its the start of the season, and shots have already been fired. An adult in very good condition. This afternoon here indicating classic "snakey" weather. Five prize dogs are currently under observation locked up on the verandah, the champion bitch is down at the vets waiting (she had the fella in her mouth). Venom at the start of the season is particularly strong. Bro the cat is benefiting from the free meal...he is a survivor of a snake bite from last season (cats fare much better than dogs with tiger snake bite).
