After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

    peanuts  :pan
You know what, freshly roasted peanuts are sublime And yes they can also be roasted at lower temperatures in the KKTO KK
  • KK - I've pretty much decided on my list (on tapatalk right now, so a bit hard to find and repeat), it's basically the BH/UNM blend plus the simpler MyCuppa blend. And a decaf. Looking forward to trying peanuts in there! Lacehim, it was both simple and obtuse! You know that ground wire that was attached to the motor? My BIL simply soldered the second lead onto that wire. Will definitely fix those bolts too! Christmas shopping today, then KKTO building!
  • What temp for peanuts? There's nothing like the distraction of christmas to get in the way of roasting and building projects ehh Kelsey? I have to deal with shopping traffic just to get to work so i leave half hour early so not to stress out. Any chance of more photos of your progress? Cheers, Gary at G

Peanuts roast best @ 160/170 deg Celsius for a slower roast but can go as high as 250 deg Celsius One day I want to try chestnuts KK
  • I'm going to try and get some more done tomorrow and will take more photos when I do. I've realised how critical the build of the stand is. We just knocked it up, but one really needs to ensure the everything is straight and aligned precisely - if the motor is on even a slight angle, the agitator blades 'wobble' within the pot.
  • Start with a new bit of wood for that motor, then alight it, mark it, and then drill the holes! Told you my woodwork was dodgy, but the rest should be fine.  Trial and error with all these things. Post up a photo of your motor wiring, would love to see how ya fixed it.
  • Mine would have been worse!! I reckon the current one just needs a minor adjustment.
  • Hopefully this works, never tried adding photos by Tapatalk before. You can see that the brown wire that was previously attached to the motor in two places is now attached to the other wire.
  • While there was some misalignment of holes that's now been rectified I was still getting some odd lateral movement in the driveshaft. It was hard to spot, except that the scraping noise of the blades was not constant and there was a periodic lifting of the perforated steel of the inner pot. I wound up taking everything apart to look at just the driveshaft - still wobbled. Looked at just the drive socket - still wobbled. The drive itself... hard to say, I'm really not sure. I'm a little stuck and have run out of time - hungry, tired grumpy boy needs attention as he has all weekend, so I'm not sure when I'll have a spare moment to try and sort this out, although I'm probably not mechanically minded enough to really do so.

The spring mod controlled this observation but a little scrapping is OK It normally goes when beans are added and the roaster is hot As for the socket wobble, try adding a little blue-tac inside the socket to nut coupling to keep it rigid & if that solves your problem then you can make it permanent KK
  • KK< I'll give that a try, thanks. AM, you're welcome to drop by for a look-see and a brew on Tuesday (I'm in Caloundra). I was going planning on heading up to Peregian Beach to see Michael on Tues but some matters of state have come up that's making that look unlikely..... :(
  • KK, I forgot to ask - what's the tolerance for space under the agitator blades?
  • Kelsey you can do a spring mod if you have the tools See drawing I just did for you We have the springs in the KK shop or you can go and source some at a hardware shop KK
  • And here's some pics of the mod I did a while back, before I upgraded to a double agitator. agitator2-1.jpg agitator3.jpg agitator1.jpg agitator2.jpg cheers :)
  • I might be able to do that for ya Kelsey.  If you need any help let me know.  I can finish it for you if you run out of time. FYI Kelsey is using two single blades to make a twin.

Yep I saw that The other one looks like your old agitator blade, before you upgraded to the twin blade So that means you have to do it twice  ;D KK
  • I wonder how much heat the drive socket will see? I've been looking for an excuse to order some Sugru.

    At a guess 80 to 100 deg C
  • Cool, Sugru is rated to 180.

I was keen to try this until I saw what they did to that Nikon dslr!  Already the most comfortable cameras... oh the horror: I'm out!
  • I've got to say this drive shaft and motor is causing me a great deal of grief. [embed=425,349] Plus it's now rarely making it up to full speed. I've read about it elsewhere and have seen it in action - the motor starts at a slower speed then switches to the faster speed. Mine's no longer switching to the faster speed.
  • Personally I would be exchanging the motor for one that works and also seek a window winder motor I suspect that the gears or worm drive mechanism inside the housing are binding KK
  • Why is a window winder motor better?

Its built similar to a wiper motor but has a thinner profile KK
  • Gotcha. Mounting doesn't look quite as easy on the ones I'm seeing on eBay, but it's hard to tell. The wiper motor was pretty easy.

    Should be similar  Steve_window-Motors.jpg KK
  • Mine starts like yours and I have to apply pressure to the agitator in the direction that it's turning to get it to speed up.  Mine turns clockwise and will only turn at the lower speed anti clockwise.  Give it some tough love and force it o turn faster.. that's how mine works.
  • Thanks for that Brett, that got it working! Here's a test without any beans: [embed=425,349] And here's a test that I left running for 30 minutes with 600g of green: [embed=425,349] A couple of points:
[li]I've definitely still got some driveshaft alignment issues - the holes between the roast chamber and the insert liner aren't perfectly aligned. I need to fix this[/li] [li]It looks to me as if the older blade (it's slightly darker in colour) needs to be straightened out - the beans on the newer blade are getting more agitated than the ones on the older blade -
would anyone else agree?[/li] [li]I think I'll do that spring mod. It sounds like beans are getting caught under the agitator blades.[/li] Nevertheless, I think I'll have a go at roasting those beans tonight even as it is. A heck of a lot of chaff was left in the insert liner even on this test run. Not quite as much as I've seen at the end of a full roast, but I wonder if it wouldn't be worth leaving the beans in there to de-chaff for 30 minutes or more, discarding the chaff, then doing the roast?
  • Well done Kelsey, I prefer to vac out after every roast. My feeling is the chaff will add unwanted flavours to the roast because it shares the same environment as the beans. Initially i conducted 3 back to back roasts, and then found the beans had a slightly ashy taste on some batches, so i can only presume it's chaff related. gary at G
  • Awesome!!! What weight of greens is in thesecond video?
