After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.
Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.
Gday BF and welcome to the Crema forum I think that I may visit you in the future if the wife can be convinced to venture your way KK
Goes without saying all coffee peoples are most welcome to come and play with the toys for the interstate lot about 1/2 an hour after the Great Ocean Rd ends ;D Day off today to ease the stress of my workload played with coffee at home and went and looked at my K10 making chain store coffee this afternoon. Very interesting to watch by the numbers, scales and timers coffee being made.
A warm welcome to the newbies and other 'not-so-newbies' I pop in and out of here and might not say much, mostly because Wotb likes to read out loud while he reads this forum sometimes and I don't even need to login to read ! Great Ocean Road...we need to visit sometime BF, Wotb has never been there...
Hi all, since I see a lot of familiar and respected names here, I thought I'd better join up. A bit about me: Born in Cyprus (army brat). Brought up in Scotland. Lived in Scotland, England, California, New Zealand (I am a New Zealander, but also have certain Scottish traits). Now living in Melbourne and no plans to move. Started work as a software developer, but soon moved from the dark side across to customer service and support which is what took me around the world, solving problems as I went. Now self-employed running pet care services business, but who knows what the future holds. First experience with 'real coffee' was when I picked up three Cona syphon coffee makers in the mid '70s for a couple of quid. As I was using crap coffee, I never fully appreciated what they are capable of and wish I still had them. Next experience was working in California where our company had 50 or so La Pav single groups (liberally spread around the campus). I kinda gave up coffee when in Auckland - not that you can't get good coffee there, but our office only had a superauto and in comparison to the Wellington guys E-61 two group, it just didnt do it for me. More recently, the driving force to start drinking coffee again was when I cleared room in my study for a long dormant Espressigo (basically Gaggia classic) and decided it was time to make something better at home. So began the fascination with roasting and making better coffee at home. Currently using a frankenpopper to roast, but now I've cleared a couple of projects of my todo list, modifying the hottop may happen soon. Apart from coffee, what floats my boat? Gaining and sharing knowledge (gotta love itunesU) Getting into arguments - as in a connected series of statements intended to establish a proposition, not just contradiction. Running (10k+) Messing about with motorbikes - currently got an old GS750E that is making very slow progress towards roadworthiness. Homebrewing. 'Repurposing' unwanted items - currently making a shed light from an old flatbed scanner for example. What winds me up? Too many things to mention and as this seems to be the 'friendly forum' I'll try counting to ten before venting. And finally if you sound out the letters of my screen name you've got my first name and last initial, so if we ever meet, you know what to call me.
Welcome to the Gang Ewan (at a guess) Also known as other names What model Hottop do you have again? I still need to find some time to pull my modded 'D version' apart again for photos and a write up but mine has manual element and rear fan control with some fairly simple mods. Basically 555 timer and an SSR for the element. I need to make some time to write it up to make it more clear for others to follow.

Yep, you guessed right, thought you would. It's the same as yours - model 8828D. You were going to send me details of cap/resistor values you used quite some time ago, but probably forgot due to post St Pats day hangover I am still undecided whether to do the 555 thing for the heater, or use one of the many triac circuits I got lying around and control it directly. Will probably not happen until July anyway due to a trip back to the UK coming up.
Without getting to far off the welcome trail have a read here http://home.chattanooga.net/~cdp/boilnew/boilnew.htm for the basics of the hijack. I just used switches to trigger the other parts of the HT (drum, bean cooler etc). The bottom board does all the power stuff and the display is the brain of the HT so use just the bottom. Catch you for a coffee again if you get back this way
Welcome Ewan to the friendly crema forum You are fellow home roaster & tinkerer My wife is Cyprian by the way We will get to know you more as you participate KK
Hi I thought I'd join this forum too after seeing so many familiar names. Plus Lacehim's thread on modding his Lusso was irresistable! :D I'm James, have the same username as at CS and look forward to reading everyone's views. Cheers James SniffCoffee

And we have been so quiet about it too, welcome along
Haha as soon as someone said AM had disappeared it took me a whole two minutes, if that to find him, I have been reading this forum for a while though as it's one of the first ones recommended to me when I first started my journey
Geetings all ! "Redzone" here, but now days using "Beanlab" as a handle ! Reformed Alcoholic/Druggy and general pain in the butt to society, now father of 4 exceptional children and husband to Ginny with our 20th wedding anniversary this year. Both fulltime Personal Trainers (nearly 30 years for me) and part time roaster and full-time coffee freak. Followed my online mates here, and really enjoy keeping in contact with and learning from my Aussie friends via forums and the odd trip across the ditch. Chris
welcome Beanlab - don't usually admit to this, but originally a K1W1 myself, although admittedly that was a very long time [and about three continents] ago
