After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

Show Your Heart

edited March 2013 in Off-topic
Hi everyone.

Was having a coffee and thought would it be a great idea to get everyone to have some fun showing off the most basic and easiest of latte art achievable, which is the heart.

To make a heart, make an espresso which has decent crema, then simply steam and texture milk (full cream is best but skim or hi lo milk is okay).
Tap and swirl the milk on the bench, tilt the cup,  then pour from a height til halfway up. Bring the jug down and wiggle steadily as you are pouring near the surface of the milk. Then lift the jug and at same time draw a line of milk across to finish. This will suck the lines into the middle, thus making a heart.

Tip. My best heart are the kind where i wiggle the jug upon pouring just a few times, then keep the jug steady but keep pouring, then lift and draw across. This will result in a nice heart with a few lines on the outer heart for artistic value and a solid white in the middle for contrast.

Have a go. Don't judge others and have fun displaying your work.

  • I pour hearts pretty much all the time now I will post a photo later KK
  • This afternoon I snapped this photo of a heart I poured  :thumb: Attachment not found.
  • And I,ll be happy to drink that one KK. Nice work. That would be a classical heart. I,ll make another one this weekend and post. Anyone else like to join in the fun?  ;D What I found easy is with my android phone, there's the Dropbox app. When i take photos with the phone, the photo is also copied to the Dropbox folder of the pc sent via the wireless modem. It saves me dragging the camera out and setting it up. Plus no need for transfer cables. With the phone, take picture. Go to pc and transfer the pic from there to the attachment facility of the post reply. Others here would go one step further and transfer simply from phone to the website.
  • Sure Gary, remember, you asked for this...  I apologise to anyone who is offended by my latte art:
  • My hearts suck balls - kinda like those ones on Brett's big balled dragon  :D
  • Did this a few days ago.  Not a great shot but nice contrast.  I stuggle to get a good latte art in these Bodum Dual Wall Glasses so not a bad achievement.  Thanks Gary for starting this thread, it's gave me some motivation to take a photo! 12cfc858-79f8-4904-8ba5-9cc4e3545a6d_zpsfe3f4f57.jpg
  • Rubbish but its a start to better hearts
  • Ha ha Brett. I do remember seeing those infamous dragon balls somewhere else. Reminded me of a car endowed with a gold plated metal  pair hanging off the towbar. That certainly looks eye catching with great contrast Lacehim. Derrilex, my hearts in the first few months were worse than that, and i,m a slow learner, a bit like a tortoise and the hare race. Kinda like once I get there, there's no stopping me lol. Keep making more of those and post some more. Here's a more conventional heart for my lovey,s morning coffee. Always get a smile from her.. ;)
  • Perhaps to add more interest to this topic, add some info when you post your pic. My hearts were created using the Rancilio Silvia, Compak K3, Brownes milk and a blend of Monte Allegro, Costa Rica La Pala, Ethiopian Mormora Naturals and a small percentage of Elk Indian robusta. IMO, the blend was not good til one week and a half after roasting due to the degassing resulting in bubbles in the crema which ruins the latte art. The pic above made with the blend two weeks old.
  • Thanks G!  I will continue the research inspired by the other pictures in this thread.
  • I can usually do better but 4 hours sleep and skim milk don't help...
  • Did a quick heart and made time to take a snap shot Beans are - part of the 700 gr roast of El Salvadore Finca Alaska on the 25 March 2013 These beans are just showing the best flavour now mmmmmmm Attachment not found.
  • One from a while back, getting microfoam is tricky in the Orphan Espresso 150ml Jug. [attachimg=1]
  • I did this heart on purpose as an attempt at - Art Nouveau  I think it came out rather well  :-| Edit just to add - The beans used are part of the Easter roast on the KKTO of Brazil Pedra Redonda ( Catuai pulped natural ) [attachimg=1] KK
  • Two this morning poured from the same jug. Pura milk, seems to be getting better for texturing... Blend of India Tiger Mountain, Kenya Peaberry and Sumatra Gayo. Promac 2 group and K10 grinder.
  • even though I've been into coffee for years I don't generally practice latte art but I should so I can improve! Here is one today from a freshly pulled PNG Waghi doppio, bit off center! [attachimg=1] [attachimg=2]
  • Looks good enough to swim in Ros  :thumb: :thumb:
  • No idea what happened here haha [attachimg=1]
  • Woo.. you nailed the contrast there ros. A steadier hand and plenty of practice should get you there.  :thumb: Maintain the same contrast in your pic and you got yourself a killer heart. My contrast not that great but managed to keep these ole hands steady for these melters.  :P
  • Been reading alot lately and following this thread, but time has not let me participate. My heart is currently being poured into my new daughter, now 15 days old. Needed coffee today and decided to dedicate these to my baby girl (insert proud dad here ;D)

  • :thumb: Congrats from me too ronin. All the best to your daughter's new life's journey and a new chapter on yours. Post some pics on the photo thread. Am sure a few girly members will get clucky. Good work on the pair of hearts there.
  • Congrats mate.  You'll need the caffeine with the lack of sleep heading your way! :) Lovely heart too, I need to keep practicing!
  • Congrats on the new bub  ^-^ Happy times I'm sure you will be needing more coffees over the coming months  :D Some latest attempts
  • Let me first apologise for this photo and has lost its initial shine  It took me a couple of minutes to find the IPad and take a snap shot of it It's a three tone pour brilliant white heart thats enclosed in dark chocolate hands, and then surrounded with a mocha balloon Sounds like an advertorial Attachment not found.
  • Well here is my Yemen mocca heart....
  • KK, I once took a pic of a bubbly looking heart after i tapped it on the bench to get rid of the bubbles after leaving it for a minute. I canned the pic as it was unsatisfactory to post. That was during the time I was getting to grips with the steaming power of the LM Srada steaming about 200ml of milk in a 300 ml jug. When it nearly got hot enough the swirling milk escaped the jug and proceeded to shower my hand  with 65 degree cow juice. Jonty, I,ve done some garlic hearts but yours made me want to reach out and grab the glass to have a sip. Yemen...mmm...
  • Better / good enough. What's the next challenge :D
