After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

ES 3 Espresso Strietman releases an updated model

edited February 2014 in Espresso Machines
Hi, recently (Xmas 2013) Wouter Strietman released an updated version of his Manual Espresso Machine and so the ES 2 has been upgraded to the ES 3.

The machine remains at heart, a simple kettle design and a manual lever extraction.
From my uneducated perspective it appears to be a modern take on the Caraval, in terms of operation- although I understand the ES 3 has it's own design at heart, in relation to the piston assembly and operation/extraction.

Anyway, I have been trying to find user reviews of this machine and whilst there are a couple of videos 'floating around'. I am struggling to find meaningful third-party independent reviews of well... 'Making coffee using the ES 3'

There have been glimpses of the machine on the forum here, but I would like to invite owners of current and past models to share their thoughts/experiences...

Edit: It might not be clear from the pic below, but the machine plugs into mains power and the 'kettle' has an adjustable dial to set the desired extraction temperature. So it heats the water, to the pre-set temp, but does not do a 'blind boil', as such. You lift the lever for a pre-heat flush, fit the dosed group handle, pre-infuse and extract your shot.

  • Having used the Rossa Portespresso for some months now, I have really come to love and enjoy the manual aspect of the extraction. It's been quite a learning curve and the journey is yet in it's infancy, but the coffee is sublime, and is it's own reward. I bought the Rossa primarily because I wanted to have top notch Espresso whilst travelling on my motorbike (don't have bike yet, but working on it)... Anyway, I've achieved my goal of sublime espresso but frankly I've made a noose for my own neck- because the 'others' in the house won't use the Rossa and so guess who's doin all the cranking, all the time....( I have the HC- Hand Crank version)... In his description of using the ES 3 Wouter refers to the ease and joy of adjusting both extraction temperature and extraction profile and how subtle variances of both can reveal many layers of flavour, in the cup. I can really understand and appreciate his comments because my own experience with the Rossa mirrors this observation. I love my Rossa, but for making multiple brews for multiple people, up to several times a day, it is really becoming 'hard work'... I'm hoping that maybe the ES 3 will still allow me the wonderful feedback and control that only a manual extraction can reveal... Whilst at the same time making the extraction process somewhat less of a burden... And of course- getting the monkey off my back- so that the 'others' in the house might 'take the hint' and make their own coffee... I welcome your thoughts, observations and feedback....
  • Looks wonderful!  What about repeat-ability?  If you're making more and more coffee the process has to streamlined and result I compromised.  Go instead for a K10 and a Mirage Lever ;) :stir Yeah I know... Spring levers aren't organic enough.
  • Well Hell Yeah!... Who wouldn't like a Mirage gracing their benchtop... Who knows, I may well end up with a his and her's, we shall see... In the meantime, I nearly bought a Carimali Uno the other day... So who knows??? Now, if I could find one of these Faema 'Classics' at less than stratospheric price....
  • I've always loved the e-61 Legend.  Does that make me a postmodernist??
  • A connoisseur to be sure, Brett...

I like that, buy why did they mount it in the bathroom?
  • Aaah, curious indeed. Mind you I've been known to take a brew with me while I'm getting myself ready for the day ahead. Opens up all sorts of possibilities... Got me thinking... Is there anywhere I 'wouldn't' consume coffee...
  • I am wondering why 'manual extraction' methods are so unpopular??? Not in a negative way, just a complete lack of interest. On the other hand my Rossa HC is numbered four hundred and something. (He etches the serial number under the main body seal) Assuming Ross started at 001, that's a pretty impressive sales result, for such a specialised device that is only really marketed by word of mouth and an informational website. Some have struggled to achieve desired results, although I put that down to operator shortcomings. Talking about espresso coffee; There are certainly a whole lot of devices and paraphernalia that deliver mediocre or ordinary, at best, results. There are of course exceptions that deliver stellar results. It's almost feels like a guarded secret to be kept by the privileged few, only spoken about in hushed enclaves. No, it's not that either. I think it's a total lack of interest... But Why is it so? Curious minds want to know?
  • OG only the Russian language with it's 36 letters that was once 144 letters with images behind them can create the way to explain it. ?????? ??????? ???? ???? ?????? you can not translate this with google grasshopper
  • Aaaah, I'm afraid my Russian is limited to just one word :Stolichnaya Although there's every chance considering this dilemma through 'Vodka Goggles', Just might bring enlightenment, or at least inebriation, which is not such a bad side-effect... "vashe zdorovie"
  • "vashe zdorovie" [/quote] that is actually very profound,  giving to someones health and well being  without considering yourself. as per manual coffee extraction devices,  "every cricket to his own stick "  with his own song.
